The Wagner Act 1935 (Union)

In a paper of between 1,000 and 1,500 words, compare and contrast how labor relations is currently practiced compared with the manner in which the following issues were addressed before the passage of the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 (Wagner Act):

how unions organize new workers/industries,
employer resistance to union organizations,
the role of government in resolving labor disputes, and

the role of strikes.

In your essay you will need to describe and explain policies (including law) and practices common into both historical periods in order to effectively respond to the assignment. Be sure to use academic quality sources, appropriately cited according to APA formatting guidelines, to support your analysis.

To successfully complete this assignment, please note first that the length guidelines for your paper are between 1,000 and 1,500 words. To put this into practical perspective, this means your paper should not be more than about twice as long as most of your essay assignments, which had suggested lengths of about 800 words each.

Second, please note that you are given four pretty discrete subjects which you are asked to compare between the time period before the passage of the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, and the current time period. I strongly recommend that you write a separate, titled of paper for each of the four subjects, and within each section compare and contrast how each subject was handled before 1935, and how each is presently handled. The alternative would be to set up the paper to have one section covering all four topics for each of the two time frames, but I do not recommend this structure because I would have to be jumping from one part of your paper to another several times to see your comparisons. In addition, I think that trying to set up the paper in two parts by time periods increases the chances that you will inadvertently not include one or more of the four topics you are asked to compare and contrast, which would cause you to lose points.

Third, recognize what you are being asked to do in this assignment: “compare and contrast” how each subject was handled in each of the time periods. Make sure that what you are doing here is noting similarities between how each particular subject is dealt with in each time period, and also discussing the differences in how each is dealt with.

Finally, as the last paragraph of the instructions indicate, in making your comparisons on each topic you will need to describe and explain policies, laws and practices which were common to EACH of the two (not both) time periods in making your comparisons. In other words, provide specific evidence to support your arguments in your comparisons.
