To Loan or Not to Loan
In the article Can an “Ethical” Bank Support Guns and Fracking?, (Links to an external site.) Jay McGuane has found himself in the middle of an ethical dilemma. McGuane has just opened the Rocky Mountain Green Bank, a company whose mission is to promote environmental stewardship. RMGB is purported to be an ethical bank. He has just received two loan applications from potential customers who are hoping to obtain business loans. McGuane wants and needs the business. After all, a bank must make money. But some people might consider these loans rather controversial. Since McGuane’s business is to be considered an ethical bank, he must decide whether granting these loans is ethical or not, and if he should proceed with these loans, or not.
Assume you are on the advisory board for Rocky Mountain Green Bank. Your responsibility is to assist McGuane determine which loans to approve based on the organization’s standards and business goals.
Instructions:
Prepare a paper that discusses the following points:
Is this a systemic, organizational, or individual issue?
Identify any legal issues that may exist.
Describe the point/counterpoint(s) for RMGB in making these loans.
As an advisory board member, would you recommend RMGB approve or deny the two loans in question? Justify your position.
Using research to support your response, explain any short term and long term benefits to approving or denying these two loans.
Use a minimum of four credible sources, which may include this week’s supplemental reading and other sources, to support your findings and conclusions.
