The aim of feminist philosophy is to overthrow patriarchal hierarchies that are based on gender through a transformation in the culture and social change (Murdock, 2017). One central aspect of Strategic theory is to manipulate the family hierarchy especially when there is a traditional family hierarchical dynamic that is causing dysfunction. I would utilize feminist orientation under the umbrella of Strategic therapy; specifically, I would manipulate the hierarchy within the family through feminist philosophy especially if there is a substantial power deferential in which a patriarchal system is in place and the father is “in charge” and must be obeyed (Murdock, 2017). The use of feminist philosophy would also be utilized to balance out the traditional roles that are many times present in Strategic family therapy.
I would also utilize feminist theory to counsel couples because it offers key concepts such as client affirmation, women-centered activism, adoption of gender role perspectives, and egalitarian relationships (Murdock, 2017). These are key components to a healthy couple. Power sharing and collaboration is especially important in couples. Murdock, 2017 describes the outcome of study conducted in 2005 by Rader and Gilbert, “The study confirmed the centrality of egalitarianism to FT: power sharing was reported more frequently by therapists identifying as feminist and also by the clients of these therapists when compared to therapists who did not identify as feminist” (Murdock, 2017, p. 390).
Feminist orientation in therapy may also be beneficial to individuals coming into the counseling environment with issues involving discrimination or social injustice. Feminist orientation is grounded on sensitivity to oppression; therefore, it recognizes that there is a discrepancy in regard to power and influence between minorities/women and the male/white/middle class.

One aspect of solution-based therapy that benefits a client with the pressure of a short therapeutic time frame is that the therapy is designed to be short. Murdock, 2017, writes, “Typically, clients in SF therapy complete four to five sessions, and most find their solutions in fewer than 10 sessions. Sometimes, clients attend only a single session of counseling and emerge as satisfied customers” (Murdock, 2017, p. 460). Solution based therapy also places importance on the first sessions. During the first session, the counselor will assist the client in developing solutions. The counselor does not address mental mechanisms, power structures, or cultural influences; rather, they focus on the client developing his or her own solutions or goals and how they will be met as quickly as possible. This aspect of solution-based therapy is useful when the counselor is confined by a limited number of sessions due to insurance constraints. The counselor will have to drill down as to what the client want and needs in order to experience solutions in regard to their “problem”.
When utilizing this therapy, the counselor must materialize what healthy looks, and sounds like coming from the client’s perspective. The therapy must be a collaborative effort in which the counselor and client. This atmosphere must be established in the first session by inviting the client to participate in cooperative behaviors between client and counselor (Murdock, 2017). The counselor must take into consideration that SF therapy can be shallow in nature because it does not delve into contributing constructs of the psyche such as cognition, background, parental interaction, or cultural implications (Murdock, 2017). When utilizing this therapy, the counselor should adopt certain techniques from other theories that are short term, are addressing client solutions, and address the clients internal psychological functioning.
