Traditional Chinese Medicine

Rewrite :

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a form of medicine that has existed for a long time. It is one of the oldest ways of medicine in the world. TCM involves mind and body practices and the use of herbal products to solve health problems. It is used by Americans today to solve diseases such as bronchitis, heart diseases, mental disorder, and many other diseases. Americans also use TCM to solve a variety of symptoms such as pain, insomnia, stress, and depression. They, therefore, use TCM as alternative medicine, before their conditions get severe, and they have to seek western medicine. The World Health Organization recognizes the use of TCM as a form of primary care. There, however, is no conclusive research that shows the effectiveness of TCM. It, however, does not stop the practice from growing in popularity throughout the world. The following is an in-depth analysis of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
An article named ‘6 Traditional Chinese Medicine Techniques’ by Practical Pain Management outlines the different TCM practices. The article begins by describing the different techniques. These are acupuncture, moxibustion, Tui Na massage, cupping or scrapping, use of herbs, and use of nutrition. The article also highlights the methods that TCM practitioners use to diagnose different diseases. These techniques include smelling, looking, asking, touching, and listening. They observe the patient’s behavior and pay attention to the features of their tongue. It consists of the shape, size, tension, color, and coating of the tongue. These features can show if a patient is suffering from diseases that affect the heart, lungs, kidney, bladder, liver, stomach, and spleen. The tongue has features that indicate bodily functions such as the state of the blood, organs, imbalances in digestion, deficiencies, and excesses.
According to the article, acupuncture is the most popular type of TCM. It involves inserting needles through a person’s skin. These needles penetrate various depths and are placed on different parts of the body. It can ease the pain a person is suffering from and many other complaints (Xiang, Cheng, Shen, Xu, & Liu, 2017). The practitioners believe good health is a balance of yin and yang. Therefore, when a person is sick, there is an imbalance. Through acupuncture at the right points on the body, the practitioner can bring back the balance of the flow of energy, therefore healing someone of any illness.
The second technique is moxibustion. Moxibustion involves burning moxa, which is a mugwort root on particular points on the body. This burning facilitates healing. Some of its benefits include strengthening the kidney, disperse cold, dissolve stagnation, and treat menstrual pain. Practitioners use the moxa to warm on the patient’s body and stimulate the smoother flow of blood. After some time, the practitioner removes the moxa from the skin before it burns enough to scar the patient.
The third technique is the Tui Na massage. It is a blend of both acupressure and massage. The massage and acupuncture are alike in that it stimulates the flow of qi to promote the balance in the body. Imbalance in the body is believed to be caused by illnesses. A practitioner uses different pressure techniques that differ in force and speed. Some of the methods are gentle and meditative, while others are vigorous and physical, depending on the desired effect.
The next technique is cupping, also known as scraping. In cupping, the practitioner warms up glass cups using cotton balls. The air inside the glass is heated and expands. The practitioner puts the glass on a person’s body, and the air cools, creating a vacuum and sticks on the person’s body. The desired effect is the creation of suction on the skin. It is believed to treat several medical conditions including, acne, indigestion, high blood pressure, anemia infertility, menstrual period cramping, among many others. Once the cups are put on the body, blood vessels expand. The containers are left on the skin for about three minutes (Jadhav, 2018).
The next technique is the use of Chinese herbs. These herbs come from leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of plants such as ginger, cinnamon, ginseng, licorice, among many other plants. The principal proposed use of herbs is the treatment of liver conditions (Fung & Linn, 2015). It, however, can treat other conditions such as coughs, asthma, allergies, insomnia, stress, stroke, diabetes, dementia, among many other conditions. These herbs can be ingested in various ways. The most common form is the herbs are taken as traditional tea. They can also be taken as a capsule, liquid extract, powder, or granule.
The last TCM technique is the use of Chinese nutrition. The principles of Chinese nutrition are that, for there to be good health, a person must understand the effects of food on the human body. A person has to take a balanced diet, which includes all five tastes of Chinese nutrition. These are spicy, sour, bitter, sweet, and salty. A person, therefore, needs to eat good food to prevent the occurrence of diseases.
In conclusion, the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine are evident by the many numbers of years in which the medicine has been in existence. People, however, need to research more on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Further research will help unearth some benefits people are not aware of currently. It will go a long way in assisting the medicine move from an alternative form of medicine.
