Two Concert Reviews
Required to write a critique of two concerts of their choice. Concert reviews must be of an art music nature. Choices include: St. Augustine recitals or concerts, Daytona Beach Community College concerts, FSCJ Symphonic Band, Band Jazz or Chorale, classical recitals solo or chamber, opera, Youth Orchestra or First Coast Wind Symphony. The Jacksonville Symphony provides concerts at a discount for students, but tickets must be obtained at the box office. The concerts are held at The Times Union Center for the Performing Arts downtown on Water Street. The review must be the length of one page. You may also find prerecorded events performed by the Jacksonville Symphony in YouTube. The symphony includes Friday evening live stream performances from the Masterworks concert series. A separate heading for each selected musical composition and composer presented at the event in the concert must be included with your personal review and thoughts pertaining to the performance. Compact disc listening of 90 minutes or DVD/VHS viewing of concerts may be authorized through the professor if concert activity is not available to the student at the time the course is offered (ex: summer school or fast track courses). YouTube is a good place for viewing concerts, but selected videos or streaming must provide substantial information. The review will include the following information:
Date of the concert
The performance organization (Jacksonville Symphony, local college band ensemble, choral concert, etc.)
The conductor’s name
Solo or primary performer(s)
Title of musical selections and the correct spelling of the composer
Musical terminology learned in the course
Recording dates must be included with the summer school VHS/DVD viewing or CD listening
A separate heading for each selected musical composition and composer presented at the event in the concert must be included with your personal review and thoughts pertaining to the performance.
