Purpose: Like much academic writing, the literature review has multiple purposes. The primary purpose is to synthesize the focus of the articles you choose, to draw a conclusion about the range and themes of criticism on the author’s work or on anacademic topic beyond literature (English curriculum, for example). Therefore, the essay will be objective (summarize the articles) and subjective (your commentary on the articles). You may enter the conversation throughout the essay as you comment on the articles. For the conclusion, offer an overview of your approach to the topic based on your knowledge and professional preferences.
Procedure:
✓ To begin, select an author and one of his/her works that you like or about which you want to learn more.
✓ Alternately, select a topic/issue that impacts English Studies (at any level), or elementary education (focus on English), or writing centers (at any level, including corporate).
✓ Use the library databases to search for articles on the topic for the last ten years. [Gabriele Library Databases Subject Guide is a good start to choose databases.]
✓ Select, read, and summarize each article. You will begin to see patterns in the range of points raised; isolate them.
✓ Find out something about the authors’ credibility since that will be important as you put the final document together.
This essay will be @ 8 pages long.
It will include 6 sources, all critical journal essays.

“How is a literature review different from an academic research paper?
The main focus of an academic research paper is to develop a new argument, and a research paper will contain a literature review as one of its parts. In a research paper, you use the literature as a foundation and as support for a new insight that you contribute. The focus of a literature review, however, is to summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of others without adding new contributions.
Find a focus
A literature review, like a term paper, is usually organized around ideas, not the sources themselves as an annotated bibliography would be organized. This means that you will not just simply list your sources and go into detail about each one of them, one at a time. No. As you read widely but selectively in your topic area, consider instead what themes or issues connect your sources together. Do they present one or different solutions? Is there an aspect of the field that is missing? How well do they present the material and do they portray it according to an appropriate theory? Do they reveal a trend in the field? A raging debate? Pick one of these themes to focus the organization of your review.
Construct a working thesis statement
Then use the focus you’ve found to construct a thesis statement. Yes! Literature reviews have thesis statements as well! However, your thesis statement will not necessarily argue for a position or an opinion; rather it will argue for a particular perspective on the material. More and more cultural studies scholars are accepting popular media as a subject worthy of academic consideration.
Consider organization
You’ve got a focus, and you’ve narrowed it down to a thesis statement. Now what is the most effective way of presenting the information? What are the most important topics, subtopics, etc., that your review needs to include? And in what order should you present them?”
