What do you mean “Earth Sciences”?

At first glance, finding something related to “Earth Science” seems like it might be a stretch for some topics. What if your topic is on something like an art movement or a political situation? Earth sciences encompass everything from geology to climate studies. Things like climate tend to affect all parts of the human experience. Take for instance this article on art during what they call “The Little Ice Age.” Natural disasters, be they earthquakes or hurricanes, can cause things like famine or disease which can in turn lead to political uprisings. The characteristics of the land we live in dictate how we live. Desert cultures are necessarily different from those on the plains or the mountains. Look for articles in databases related to Environmental Studies, Geosciences or even Agriculture. Those aren’t the only options. Research the time and place of your topic and think about how it could be affected by the physical world

Urban vegetative plots are used in this study of satisfaction and physiological effects related to the environmental color on four distinct age groups.

Urban Forestry & Urban Greening is an international, peer reviewed journal that presents articles on urban planning and design and its impact on economics, sociology, environmental psychology, public health and education.

This article was insightful with respect to how color impacts everyone. Even the slightest discrepancies between light green and dark green can evoke different responses. All participants favored light green as it reminded them of new growth and new life. The study of 64 participants took place in Shanghai on a day of negligible wind, light cloud cover and in a location distant from noise or visuals of roads and cars. The age groups that had the greatest satisfaction rates to urban vegetation were children up to the age of 14 and those over the age of 65. Having been to both Nairobi and Oslo it is abundantly clear that vegetation is much more prevalent in the city of Oslo. Certainly, urban green belts are also influenced by wealth, city growth and climate but it would seem the Oslo residents probably enjoy greater urban vegetation and hence may be more positively affected by their urban surroundings.

The use of this article in my topic would probably be part of a comparison of regional ambience between Africa and Norway; specifically, the capital cities of Nairobi and Oslo. A climate driven observation of specific growing seasons and vegetation would perhaps tie into color biases as I have discovered in other research articles between the two countries.
