What do you do …. What would you do in this situation?
Assume you are the Human Resources manager for a large retail store (like Home Depot) with 400 employees. One of your assistants steps into your office to seek an exception for a candidate’s application for employment. The candidate is really sharp with a good personality, handsome, high school graduate, two years of tech school, and an experienced contractor for 4 years. He is a qualified citizen with reasonably good references. He even worked for a competitor for a year. Only problem is he was incarcerated for 6 months for disorderly conduct at a bar last year. On the other hand your company policy is to not hire anyone with a prison record; although you do have the authority to override that rule. You are short 4 people in the building materials department and you are having to consider inexperienced high school graduates. You are also under pressure by corporate HQ to expand store revenues. Your recruiter knows him and will vouch for his character and points out he has contacts with other contractors that may begin shopping at your store. What would you do and why?
