Assignment: Choose one of the following types of Americans. Write a 4 1/2 to 5 page paper beginning with a thesis which determines the impact that type of person had on the nation. In addition to providing evidence to prove you thesis, create context by answering the following questions. Who were they and what was their background? What was their experience in America? What happened to them after the time frame mentioned in the assignment?
This is not meant to be a biography, but rather a general examination of these types of people.

Paper Particulars
Research: Use Books (check the stacks and the Reserve List at the Library), Magazine articles and appropriate web resources. Do not be afraid to use the skills of the excellent staff at the Library to help you in your search.
In final form you should use between 5-7 sources. You must use at least 1 book OR 2 articles as part of your sources. Please only use secondary sources. No Encyclopedias, Web Encyclopedias, Textbooks or class notes. Any information taken from class lectures is considered general knowledge and need not be documented.
Documentation
For this paper I am requiring you to use the Turabian, or Chicago Manual of Style documentation system. This is a documentation style favored by historians. You may be unfamiliar with the details of this style, but I will be worth paying close attention to the format. By not following the proper Documentation Techniques you leave yourself open to the charge of plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as presenting as new and original another person’s work (including other students) without properly crediting the source. The offense is taken very seriously at this institution. If you are found to be plagiarizing you will immediately receive a ZERO for the paper and potentially could be expelled.
Documenting Quotations:
I expect you to use direct quotes to provide evidence in supporting your thesis. Please document all direct quotes and paraphrases using either footnotes in the paper or endnotes at the end of the text.
Bloc Quotations Occasionally you will want to use an extensive quote. Any quote that takes up more than FOUR lines of texts should be treated as a bloc quotation. To present this type of quotation properly, the entire quote should be indented 10 spaces from the left margin and single spaced.
Remember that each quotation needs their own individual footnote or endnote and should be in sequential order (1,2,3 etc.). Please do not restart your numbering on every page.
